Art exhibits at Holy Wisdom Monastery

The Benedictine Sisters at Holy Wisdom Monastery sponsor art exhibits every year as part of their mission. Usually held in the spring, summer and fall, these exhibits hang in the gathering area of the LEED-certified monastery building. Selected artwork is in keeping with the monastic environment and reflects the Benedictine values of beauty, balance, simplicity, contemplation, and reverence for creation.

Current art exhibit

Sacred Spaces

August 4-
September 22, 2019

The 4th annual exhibit of artwork by Sunday Assembly members, Friends of Wisdom Prairie members, Oblates and monastery volunteers is scheduled for August 4 – September 22, 2019.  The monastery’s art jury chose work for the exhibit based on Benedictine values such as simplicity, beauty and balance. In honor of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the monastery building, this year’s exhibit theme and title will be Sacred Spaces.

Upcoming art exhibit

The Light of Being by Marcia Getto and
Passing Through by Kay Gundlach

September 27 – December 30, 2019

Artists Marcia Getto (left) and Kay Gundlach

This fall, Holy Wisdom Monastery is pleased to present a tandem exhibit of photographs. On their own, each of these two thought-provoking collections of photographs – Passing Through, by Kay Gundlach, and The Light of Being, by Marcia Getto—would stand alone; and yet, when viewed together, a dimension of depth and counter-point emerges between them.

Fall art exhibit opening reception

The fall art exhibit opens with a reception from 5:00-7:00 pm, on Friday, September 27, 2019 in the monastery’s gathering area—all are welcome, and bring your friends!

Gallery hours

The exhibits can be viewed anytime during the monastery’s public hours:  M – F, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 am.

Displaying art at the monastery

Every year, the monastery features several art exhibits and artists are welcome to submit their art for consideration (see guidelines).

Exhibits at Holy Wisdom Monastery seek to:

  • Highlight creativity as an aspect of our spiritual lives
  • Encourage a ‘new way of seeing’ by the viewer
  • Open our space to the creative gifts of others and give them an opportunity to share their work with all guests
  • Bring a representation of contemporary artistic expression to the monastery
  • Provide an additional opportunity for guests to experience Holy Wisdom Monastery

Submissions are due in December each year for the next year’s spring and fall exhibits.
