The Liturgy of the Hours is a public expression of the Benedictine call to seek God in community. The heart of this prayer is the sung and recited psalms. Through the psalms, we join all the generations who have prayed them before us. We pray in solidarity with all people in all places who experience the joys or pains expressed in the psalm texts. Likewise, the psalms give us confidence to speak boldly and honestly to God about all aspects of life.
Besides psalms, there are hymns, readings from scripture and other writings and intercessory prayer. There are also times of silence. The Liturgy of the Hours is prayed in the oratory, on the lower level of the monastery.
