Reflections on Work at Holy Wisdom Monastery…
One thing I loved about the work was that we did what we could in the time we had and then when it was time to go in for prayer – we set it aside and learned to be content with what we were able to do. It often felt more about the process than the product.
Paul was a great leader because he loves the land so much that just as important as our work was our learning about enjoying and having wonder at the land, prairie, growth, diversity… Paul shared words of wisdom about enjoying work, which I appreciated…. Work is never just work. Every action has a reason associated with it: pull this so that may grow; cut this to give that room to grow.
And Prayer…
Liturgy of the Hours brought a sense of balance to my life; I appreciated the fact that I felt like I was constantly given a chance to renew in myself the peace that comes with prayer throughout the day… This was a consistent, comforting part of the day… It taught me about discipline as a way not of limiting but of opening up to receive the Spirit.
And Community…
Everyone was very gracious. I appreciated how many people knew my name and made sure to use it – that makes you feel like you belong. The community was very friendly… The women that I worked with were quite remarkable. I enjoyed getting to know them… I feel I encounter God most through other people, to have that immediate sense of community was awesome… I have a greater understanding of monastic life, especially within a Benedictine community.
And Lasting Gifts from Holy Wisdom Monastery…
The thought that articulate and educated women share similar views on religion and the mystery of God renews within me faith in humanity. I will hold the people I met during this experience within my heart… I’ve learned how much healthier psychologically I am when I take time to be in my body and work with my hands… What will I take with me? Some really good book lists. Some very good conversations. A different way of looking at my gifts. A vision of how to live more openly and hospitably with others.
