Foundation News

Many thanks to you, our donors, for your loyal and generous support for many areas of the monastery throughout the year. Your faithfulness, especially during the economic uncertainty of the times, is an inspiration and an encouragement to all. With regard to year-end gifts, please note that 2009 gifts must be postmarked (or hand-delivered to the monastery) no later than December 31, 2009. Checks written with December dates that are postmarked or delivered to the monastery in January must legally be recorded as 2010 gifts, not 2009. Thank you in advance for helping the Foundation follow IRS rules that pertain to year-end giving. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Betsy at bliotus@benedictinewomen.org or 608-836-1631, ext 120.

Sabbatical Time:
Listening to the Spirit Within

By Sr. Mary David Walgenbach, OSB
Prioress

I received a three-month Lilly Sabbatical grant for Pastoral Leaders in 2009. The time I chose was April 15 through July 16, closing with a family celebration for my mom's 96th birthday.
The purpose of my sabbatical was to take time to renew, to reflect and to remember: "to bend back" over my community's journey of becoming the first ecumenical Benedictine monastery in North America. I accomplished my purpose. more

Nancy Sandleback: Librarian and Archivist at Holy Wisdom Monastery

By: Mike Sweitzer-Beckman
Development and Communications Coordinator

Nancy Sandleback joined the Benedictine Women of Madison staff 13 years ago and took charge of the library in 1999. The year 2009 marks the first time since she's been here that the library and archive rooms are in the same space, and she doesn't need to commute between two different buildings.
Nancy spends most of her time working on the archives of the monastery. The rest of her time is spent maintaining the 4,000 volumes in the library. These volumes cover the history of Christianity, ecumenical relations, moral theology, eco-spirituality and feminist theology. more

New Monastery Education

By: Neal Smith
Executive Director

The new monastery building is completed and everyone is moved in! Benedictines are believers in "life-long learning." So, what will the new monastery be used for from an educational perspective?
There are many facets to be explored and many new ideas as we work to fully utilize the new building. more

A Match Made in Heaven!

By: Sr. Mary David Walgenbach, OSB, Prioress and
Drew Howick, President, Benedictine Life Foundation Board of Directors

The economic reality of the last 12 - 18 months has taken its toll on most of us in one way or another. Our "Restore the Land, Renew Your Spirit" building campaign is no exception. This reality makes it all the more amazing that more than $700,000 of our $2 million goal has already been raised! Thank you to all who contributed since the building campaign began in 2008.
To help maintain our momentum, two anonymous donors each offered to match up to $100,000 contributed to the campaign by December 31, 2010. Yes, $200,000 from these generous donors + $200,000 from family and friends can become, with your help, $400,000 in new gifts to the campaign! As an added incentive, if $100,000 can be raised by the end of this year we will receive $50,000 of the match money in 2009.  more
