Sunday Assembly Outreach

Luke House

For more than a quarter century, The Community Meal Program has brought Dane County church groups and other faith-based communities together to help feed local people who are in need.

Faith is what motivates the volunteers who provide, prepare and serve the food, and then eat with the guests who come to Luke House for hospitality. The Community Meal Program brings together people across races, religions and social spheres to share a table, some time and a meal. That meal the atmosphere of hospitality in which it’s offered, are important to the guests who come to Luke House to eat. The Community Meal Program is an important and practical way of being church for the faith communities who make Luke House a part of their lives.

Each group of volunteers for a given monthly lunch or dinner chooses a menu and each member of the group chooses an item to provide on a consistent basis. Providing food for the meal is a group effort. Group members participate in the meal in different ways. Some people provide food and then attend to prepare, serve and share the meal at Luke House. Others participate by regularly providing their meal item. They may also come to Luke House only occasionally—or may seldom or even never come for the meal date—but play a key part in this ministry of hospitality nonetheless. Volunteers commit to a level of participation and to providing consistently what they can comfortably afford to supply.

On the second Tuesday of each month, members of Holy Wisdom Monastery participate in preparing, serving and sharing a meal at Luke House, 310 S. Ingersoll St, Madison.

Helping Hands Fund

Funded by donations from Sunday Assembly members for assistance to rostered members of Sunday Assembly and their immediate family (partner, children). At least two members of the Pastoral Care Committee interview the person requesting help and make a recommendation to the Sunday Assembly Council for dispersal of funds. If there are no funds available the Sunday Assembly Council Chairperson confers with the Prioress for further solicitation from Sunday Assembly members.

Vera Court

Vera Court’s programs and services are primarily for children, youth and families on Madison’s north side. After school and during the summer, children and youth programs provide a safe place to be and offer tutoring and skill development. Tom Solyst, the director, suggested that our donations help mainly the two afternoon programs. Kids who are part of that program get healthy snack foods. There is also a Kids’ Café Meal three times a week where residents of all ages are invited. Sunday Assembly’s donations will be a small gesture of sharing, once a month, with a community in need. On the third Sunday of each month people who want to donate to Vera Court write a separate check to the Benedictine Life Foundation designating it to Vera Court on the memo section of the check. Cash is also welcome. There is a separate collection basket labeled Vera Court. The Benedictine Life Foundation will forward the designated money to the Vera Court Neighborhood Center.
